                                 Update From the Field

(BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA & SEATTLE, WA, USA)  A magnitude 9.0 earthquake centered off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia triggered massive tsunamis devastating populations in coastal areas of nine countries in Southeast and South Asia.  In addition to the tsunamis, Northern Sumatra, in Indonesia also experienced widespread damage from the earthquake itself.  The death toll continues to rise throughout the region.  The number of dead and missing is well over 228,000.  Indonesia was the hardest hit country.

Short-Term Response

Uplift International provided humanitarian assistance to aid those impacted by the devastation in North Sumatra, Indonesia.  In partnership with Project Hope, Uplift International has already provided 25 tons of medicine and medical supplies, valued at $7 million.  The supplies include medicines and medical supplies that are urgently needed in natural emergency situations, such as this. FedEx  generously provided the shipment of the medicines and medical supplies from the United States to Jakarta, Indonesia, at no cost.

Uplift International worked with its long time partner in Indonesia the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) to send teams of Indonesian doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health professionals to care for the survivors.  The effort accomplished the following:

  • Provided 25 tons of medicines and medical supplies valued at $7 million

  • Placement of 320 Indonesian doctors and other health professionals to staff medical clinics in 15 camps for displaced persons

  • Treatment of over 19,00 patients

  • Rebuilding of a research library, computer center and classrooms of Syiah Kuala University Medical School, the only medical school in Aceh (click to learn more)

Building for the Future

We are now planning appropriate, essential, and coordinated follow-on and long-term capacity building health initiatives with our partner IDI. The needs of the survivors cannot be addressed by a one time short-term response.  Uplift International has been actively working in Indonesia since 1998 and is committed to working in partnership with local organizations well into the future.  As we develop our specific long-term programs to help Aceh and North Sumatra rebuild it's capacity in health, we will feature them on this web site.  Your long-term support for this effort is greatly appreciated.

We thank the US-ASEAN Business Council and it member companies for their ongoing support not only for the tsunami relief effort but to their long-term commitment to Uplift International and to the people of Indonesia.  US-ASEAN member companies that have funded or pledged support to Uplift International are:  ExxonMobil, FedEx, Harley-Davidson, Unocal, Ford Motor Company, HMS Host, PT Repex, ConnocoPhillips and UPS.  We are also grateful for the support from Honeywell, and Newmont Mining Corporation.

We are deeply appreciative to the East-West Center for their financial support and the many individuals that have donated their hard earned funds to Uplift's relief efforts and to the schools and small businesses that have made contributing to the relief effort a major event.  We have been touched by the personal and compassionate notes that have accompanied many of  the donations. Thank you and terima kasih from Uplift International, IDI, and the people of Indonesia.
