Medical Education
In December, 1998, UPLIFT International brought a delegation
of doctors and health care administrators from The George Washington
University School of Medicine to Vietnam to carry out an assessment of
health care and medical education. The group spent the bulk of its time in
Hue, in the central region of Vietnam, to begin a long-term medical
education program with Hue Medical College.
The program has continued with a five person delegation from Hue Medical
college coming to the George Washington University Medical Center in
Washington,
DC for Training in May 2000.
The purpose of
UPLIFT Internationals Medical Education Program is to improve the level of medical
education in Vietnam, expose American medical students and physicians to conditions not
often encountered in the U.S. to enhance their education and training, to
allow Vietnamese medical students
and physicians to participate in more cutting-edge training and technology, and
to foster exchanges and cooperation between the medical communities in the U.S.
and Vietnam.
The Medical Education Program
includes exchanges of students and doctors
from both
countries. The program will be expanded to include additional medical schools from both
countries. An additional component of the program will be the development of an infectious
diseases program that includes TB. Telemedicine will be a critical component of this
program.
Other Initiatives
-
Brought a telemedicine
assessment team to investigate initiating a telemedicine program to link various locations
in Vietnam with health institutions in the U.S. Arranged for the first American exchange
student to study at Hue University Medical School. Additionally,
UPLIFT International and its supporters from the business community met with Prime
Minister Phan Van Khai to discuss both telemedicine and initiating a TB education,
training, and treatment program in the southern part of Vietnam. The meeting was widely
covered on Vietnamese TV news and in the print media.
-
In cooperation with Medical
Missions, UPLIFT International sent a team of 27 doctors, nurses, and other medical
professionals to Danang General Hospital for a period of 10 days to perform surgeries,
train surgeons, conduct clinics, and repair and calibrate biomedical equipment.
-
Uplift International donated medical
books valued at nearly $500,000 to the Hue University Medical School, quadrupling the size
of the medical library. Agreed to establish a long-term medical education program that
would benefit the central region of Vietnam.
-
In an effort to advance the ability to
perform more complex surgeries at a children's hospital in Hanoi, UPLIFT International, in
cooperation with the National Fund for Vietnamese Children (NFVC), initiated a pilot
program to upgrade the level of anesthesia services of St. Paul's Children's Hospital. The
program includes the donation of anesthesia equipment and training of physicians and
nurses.
